Synopsis

Binh is a Vietnamese cook living in 30s Paris. His wealthy employers are leaving for America and he must decide whether to accompany them, stay in Paris or return to his native land. But before Binh's decision is revealed, we are transported back to his youth in French occupied Indo-China, where he learned his trade in the Governor-General's kitchens.
We learn of his time as a galley hand and of the secrets he knows about his rich and elegant employers. Intricately compelling, The Book of Salt weaves real-life characters from Gertrude Stein to Ho Chi Minh into a story of remarkable originality.
