"Never mess with the Sahara Desert!" That's what Sophie's dad is always telling her. But when Sophie meets Gidaado the Fourth and his fine albino camel, the offer of a camel ride is just too good to resist... A gripping African adventure for boys and girls alike and winner of the Glen Dimplex Children's Book Award 2006.

Synopsis

Sophie lives in Gorom-Gorom, with her carnivorous-plant obsessed dad. Despite living there for two years and speaking the local language, Sophie finds it difficult to make friends. So when she meets Gidaado, a young griot (story-teller), she agrees to join him and his albino camel, Chobbal, on a journey to his village.
It is not until they have set off, that Sophie begins to realise just how dangerous the desert is - it's full of djinnis that creep up behind you, and jump on your head and make you go mad. Not to mention the infamous Moussa ag Litni, a ruthless bandit who steals camels...

He also writes for The Guardian and occasionally for The Sunday Times.

Reviews and Press Quotes

Booktrusted

“This book is absolutely delightful. Sophie is a great heroine – clever, and kind and brave; and the story, despite containing a real, page-turning adventure, is as gentle and charming as the albino camel who grins at you comfortably from the front cover.”

LoveReading4Kids.co.uk

“...Stephen Davies has a real talent for inspiring young children.”

Mariella Frostrup, Open Book

“I really enjoyed it. I found it hard to put down.”

The Times Educational Supplement

“Pure adventure story... an exceptional short novel.”
