Santa's writing weaves intricate storylines around a cast of characters, taking the reader on a journey across many continents as the stories unfold. She was born in England in 1970 and, inspired by her mother's upbringing in Argentina, she spent a year working on an estancia there. She fell in love with travelling in the years that followed, and eventually lost her heart, not to a man, but to Argentina. Santa later wrote four novels based in Latin America in an attempt to retrieve it. This she partly achieved, though a fragment of it is so deeply entrenched in the soil that it will be there forever.

She lives in London with her husband, the historian Simon Sebag Montefiore, and their children, Lily and Sasha.
