Born in Fife in 1960, Ian Rankin graduated from the University of Edinburgh and has since been employed as grape-picker, swineherd, taxman, alcohol researcher, hi-fi journalist and punk musician. His first Rebus novel was published in 1987 and the Rebus books have now been translated into twenty-two languages.
The Inspector Rebus series have been praised for the strength of characterisation and for their gritty realisation of modern Edinburgh. Inspector Rebus is described as brooding and volatile, living in a dark underworld far from the beautiful city that the tourists inhabit. In Rebus, Ian Rankin has created one of the most memorable characters in crime fiction.
The immense success of Rebus resulted in the novels being dramatised for television, giving rise to the hit ITV drama, Rebus, starring Ken Stott as the battle-hardened detective.
Ian Rankin has been elected a Hawthornden Fellow, and was awarded the OBE in the Queen's Golden Jubilee Birthday Honours List in June 2002. Ian is now one of the UK's biggest selling crime writers with each new book in print hitting number 1 in the bestseller charts. Ian Rankin lives in Edinburgh with his wife and two sons.
